Zengguang Hou, Hong Qiao and Liang Wang Elevated to IEEE Fellow

Each year, less than .1% of the 400,000-plus members of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) are selected to become fellows, which is the organization’s highest grade of membership. Recently,  IEEE accounced the list of newly elevated fellows for the ear 2019. There are less than 40 Chinese researchers on the list. There are three researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. And they are all from the Institute of Automation.

Zengguang HOU, professor and Deputy Director of State Key Laboratory of Management and Control for Complex Systems, was elevated for his contribution in Neural Network Optimization and Rehabilitation Control. Hong QIAO, professor and Deputy Director of State Key Laboratory of Management and Control for Complex Systems, was elevated for her contribution in Robot Operation and Biologically Inspired Robot Cognition. Liang WANG, professor and Deputy Director of National Lab of Pattern Recognition was elevated for his contribution in Video based Individual Recognition and Action Analysis.

According to the IEEE website, “IEEE Fellow is a distinction reserved for select IEEE members whose extraordinary accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest are deemed fitting of this prestigious grade elevation. Currently, there are night IEEE Fellows in the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The IEEE is considered a leading authority on a wide variety of areas, ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics. With members in 160 countries, the IEEE publishes 30 percent of the world’s literature in the electrical and electronics engineering and computer science fields. The association also sponsors or co-sponsors nearly 1,700 international technical conferences each year.

Prof. Zengguang Hou's research interests cover Robotics and Automation, Intelligent Control, Rehabilitation Robot and Surgical Robot. He received the Award for Distinguished Young Scholars of China and the Second Prize of National Natural Science Award in 2017.

Prof. Hong Qiao's research interests include high-precision robot operation and biologically inspired robot cognition and operation. Prof. Qiao is the winner of the 100 Talents Program of the CAS and the winner of the National Outstanding Youth Fund and the National Million Talents Project. She won the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award in 2014.

Prof. Liang Wang’s major research interests include machine learning, pattern recognition, computer vision, multimedia processing, and data mining. He has obtained several honors and awards such as the Award for Distinguished Young Scholars of China and in recognition of Excellent Research. He is currently IEEE Fellow and IAPR Fellow.
