The Sino-European Laboratory in Computer Science, Automation and Applied Mathematics

LIAMA, was created in 1997 by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control (INRIA) as a joint Laboratory in Computer Science, Automation and Applied Mathematics between the two institutes. The first Chinese Director of LIAMA was Dr. Songde MA and the first French Director of LIAMA was Dr. Olivier MONGA.

In 2000, the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), the French Agricultural Research Center for International Development (CIRAD) joined LIAMA, which became a Sino-French laboratory, and a new agreement was signed in presence of Mr.Francois FILLON, then France’s minister of Industry.The 2nd Chinese Director was Dr. Baogang HU and the French Director Dr. Phillipe DE REFFYE.

In 2004, the French National Institute for Research in Agronomy (INRA) and the French Research Institute for GeoSciences (BRGM) became partners of LIAMA, and the 3rd edition of the LIAMA agreement was renewed.

On January 18, 2007, LIAMA celebrated its 10th anniversary with a series of academic seminars. Yong SHANG, Chinese Vice Minister of Science and Technology, Hervé LADSOUS, former French Ambassador, Zhu CHEN, former Vice President of CAS, Gérard MATHERON, director of the French Center for International Agricultural Research, Pierre GUILLON, Director of the Information Department of the French National Scientific Research Center (CNRS), Songde MA, former vice Minister of MOST, lin HE, vice president of the Institute of Automation of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASIA), Guy RIBA, vice president of the French Agricultural research Institute (INRA),Michel COSNARD, president of the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control (INRIA) and other officers from Chinese and French research institutions as well as more than 200 guests well-known in China and abroad attended the celebration.

In June 2008, LIAMA was selected by the Chinese Ministry of Science and TechnologyMOSTas a “National Center for International Research” to reinforce cooperation in the field of ICT. On October 28, 2008, the LIAMA Consortium was founded and organized the 4th edition of the LIAMA agreement signature ceremony. Hejun YIN, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Anne-Marie IDRAC, French Secretary of Foreign Trade, Hervé LADSOUS, Former French Ambassador and over 100 guests attended the ceremony. Institute of Automation of CAS (CASIA), Institute of Computing Technology of CAS (ICTCAS), Institute of Software of CAS (ISCAS), Tsinghua University, the French National Institute of Information and Automation (INRIA), the French National Scientific Research Centre (CNRS), the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD), the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA), the Groupes des Ecoles Centrales (GEC), Wageningen University (Netherlands), Utrecht University Medical Center (Netherlands), France Telecom R&D Center in China, firstly joined the LIAMA Consortium.

The 5th edition of the LIAMA Consortium Agreement was renewed in 2013. The 7th Steering Committee meeting took place on December 10th, 2013 in Beijing, Paris and Amsterdam via videoconference. Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI, Nethelands), Institut Mine-Télécom (IMT, France) and the Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth of CAS (RADI) joined LIAMA. The LIAMA Consortium now has 24 members, among which 6 founding members Institute of Automation, CAS (CASIA), French National Scientific Research Center (CNRS), East China Normal University (ECNU), French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control (Inria), Tsinghua University, Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica and 18 associated members of which EADS France as the industrial partner of LIAMA providing continuous financial support to the Consortium.

The 2016 Sino-European workshop on information science and technology(IST 2016) has been ended successfully on October 10-11,2016.Prof.Tan, the academician of CAS, Prof.Xu, director of CSAIA, Prof.Liu, deputy director of CASIA and Prof. Petit,  the CEO of INRIA attended this seminar as special guests. Chinese director of LIAMA, Prof.Tao and European director of LIAMA, Prof. Monin conducted the meeting together.

About 60 people attended the conference. The meeting focused on topics in areas of Brain Science, Virtual Reality,Artificial Intelligence and Pattern Recognition.

This seminar will offer opportunities for Chinese and European scientists and institutions to share their new ideas and setup new joint research projects within the areas of information technologies.

The current Chinese Director is Dr. Jianhua TAO and the European Director is Dr. Jean-Francois MONIN.
